The Indus School Student Council attended a Northeast Division meeting in Cherry March 6 and received the coveted “U Rock” award for their fundraising efforts.
The division has an annual state service project to which each school in the division is encouraged to contribute. The results are compiled at the last division meeting before the state conference. Then, an award is given to the school that contributes the most. At this meeting, Indus received the traveling trophy award for their work with Pennies for Patients.
To receive this award, a school in the Northeast Division must work on a service project to raise money for a specific cause. Then, the school that contributes the most money per student receives what is known as the “U Rock” award.
The service project correlates each year with the theme for the state Student Council conference. The theme this year is “Prescription for Success: Teens Kickin’ It (Childhood Diseases).” Schools could choose any fundraiser they wanted to raise money for this cause.
To go along with the theme, Indus Student Council sponsored a Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Students brought in pennies throughout the month of January for children with leukemia and lymphoma.
At the end of the month, the fundraiser brought in $565.26, which was somewhat less than in previous years, but the amount raised per student was about $3.82 — enough to win the traveling trophy.
