Indus School Report
Eight high school students from Indus School accompanied by Indus Social Studies teacher Corinne Anderson and chaperone Brenda Nelson, recently returned from an educational excursion to Greece and Italy during June 11-20. The trip was organized by Education First (EF) and they provided tour guides at educational sites to inform and educate students about the various landmarks.
Anderson, who has traveled extensively in the past two years, will be taking a leave from Indus School in order to teach in China this year. Students from her classes at Indus who traveled overseas were: Molly Baldwin, Grant Erickson, Skye Fuller, Tyler Jonson, Maria Lewis, Sofia Olesen, Chris Pokorny and JR Westover. They flew out of Minneapolis, to Philadelphia, then on to Greece as their first stop. After spending a few days in Greece, they took a night ferry to Italy, spent a few days there, then flew back to the U. S. from Rome.
Highlights the travelers visited were the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Delphi in Greece, and the Pantheon, Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica, Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, and Pompeii in Italy. They also had a chance to do some sightseeing on their own — going to the beach, shopping, and eating at various restaurants. The weather was generally hot, averaging 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Senior Grant Erickson noted, “It was nice to see all of the historical places, but I was surprised how close all of them were — mostly within walking distance of each other.”
In Greece, students sampled gyros and moussaka, and in Italy they had a lot of pasta, but also a caprese panini, bruschetta, and tiramusu. Breakfasts and dinners were provided as part of the tour, and lunches were on their own. Breakfast generally consisted of breads or pastries and cereal with Greek yogurt and candied fruits in Greece, and usually just pastries and cereal in Italy.
Fundraisers were held throughout the past school year in order to raise money for the trip.
Junior Maria Lewis commented, “The trip was definitely worth the time and effort it took to raise the money for it. It was great to experience what life is like in a different country.”
