Excitement fills the air as Indus music students prepare for the final music performances of the 2008-09 school year.

This has been a year of progress for many students, including those who have never participated before this year and those who have been involved in the music program for several years. The progress shows in the sound of the soloists, choirs, and bands which are playing more difficult music and improving their sound. It also shows in the fact that Indus students have gone on to district and state competition, placing in the Excellent and Superior categories.

Twenty piano students, under the direction of their instructor, Candy Gates, played in a piano recital on May 11 in the school commons.

The students, ranging in age from kindergarten through eighth grade, included: Jacob Pendergast, Annie Schiro, Danielle Erickson, Margeaux Belanger, Mariah Leahy, Peyton Beyer, Corrine Dahl, Hayley Gaetzke, Kerry Meyers, Nathan Belanger, Casey Meyers, Holger Olesen, Krista Zook, Aimee Townsend, Nathan Lewis, Sofia Olesen, Molly Baldwin, and Maria Lewis.

Gates was also recognized for her support of the Indus music program by students who presented her with a card and flowers.

Following the piano recital, the Indus Music Department, under the direction of Tom Belanger, presented 15 vocal and instrumental solos, duets, and other musical groupings. Several of these were performed by students who had placed at section andstate competitions, including Tanya Lukina, Mayya Yurkshat, Josie Beck,

Leo Igrokov, John Doe, and Taylor Patterson. Also performing were: Margeaux Belanger, Peyton Beyer, Reyhan Brown, Corrine Dahl, Mariah Leahy, Molly Baldwin, Sofia Olesen, Maria Lewis.

The Indus High School Band and Choir Concert on May 14 brought together the Music Department and the Family & Consumer Sciences Department for a night of entertainment. Band and Choir students performed a variety of musical selections, including “Ghost Riders,” “Benedictus,” and “Hawaii 5-0.”

At intermission, the FACS fashion class students presented an ECO Fashion Show of reused, recycled and re-thought garments.

Soloists who also performed during the evening were Taylor Patterson with “Hungarian Rhapsody” on saxophone and Blaine Freden playing “Calm is the Night” on baritone. Music awards were also presented during the evening.

Earlier on May 14, FACS students held a baked potato fund raiser and the Community Education organization held the Ninth Annual Indus Community Quilt Show in the school library. There was a three-way tie for the "Best of Show" quilt. The three names were put in a drawing and JoAnne Amundsen of Birchdale was the lucky winner of a gift certificate from the Quilter's Corner. Her quilt was entitled "Blue Streak.” It was machine pieced, and hand quilted.

The Elementary Spring Concert included Indus elementary students in grades kindergarten through second grade singing well-known patriotic songs such as “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land is Your Land,” as well as other favorites, such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Grades three-six performed

“Stay Tuned,” a short musical about television sitcoms. After intermission, the elementary band played seven selections, including “Northlake Festival Overture,” “Safari Drums Rock,” and “Pennsylvania Polka.”

A special feature during the evening was recognition of school volunteers: Wayne Meyers, Winnie Hasbargen, Pernell Sather, Zelpha Crawford and Tyler Borgen and recognition of elementary students with perfect attendance: Reyhan Brown, Mariah Leahy, Kerry and Casey Meyers, Samantha Hervey, and Holger Olesen.
