Two local International Falls residents have earned the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America can bestow.

Jeffrey Klow and Nicholas Riley have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Klow and Riley will be recognized at 2 p.m. Sunday at Faith United Church. Both are members of Troop 145, chartered by the Men’s Club of Faith United Church.

A candidate must earn 21 merit badges and complete a community service project to earn the Eagle Award. Klow partnered with the International Falls Public Library and Rainy River Community College Library to collect, catalog and donate used books. Riley partnered with Koochiching County to construct a picnic pavilion at the Birchdale Rainy River wayside rest.

An Eagle Scout service project belongs to the Eagle Scout. The scout can have help, but the scout must be the leader. The service project is the application phase of what a scout has learned; leadership, responsibility, managing projects and applying the Scout Oath, “To help other people.”

Scouts prepare a project proposal, develop a final plan, complete a fundraising application and a final report. The project proposal describes how the project will be beneficial. The final plan must list materials and permissions needed, preliminary cost estimates, project phases, and logistics and safety issues. Recruiting volunteers is a component of the project along with providing leadership.

Klow and Riley join other notable American citizens who have become Eagle Scouts, among them former President Gerald Ford, Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon and Mike Rowe, host of the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs.”

Klow is a 2013 graduate of Falls High School. He recently earned an AA degree from RRCC and plans to attend Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa and major in computer science.

Riley is a 2013 graduate of Falls High School. He recently earned an associate in arts degree from RRCC and plans to earn an associate in science degree from RRCC, with plans to major in wildlife biology at Bemidji State University.

Boy Scout Troop 145 is led by Scoutmaster Steven Bruess and Assistant Scoutmaster Greg Crow. The troop belongs to the Northern Lakes District of Voyageurs Area Council.
