Sue Nordquist was among several Minnesota world language educators honored at the Minnesota Council on the Teaching of Languages and Cultures annual fall conference.

World language teachers gathered Oct. 19 at the Earle Brown Heritage Center, Brooklyn Center, for professional development workshops and to recognize some outstanding achievements of their colleagues.

Janice Holter Kittok, Minneapolis Public Schools Content Lead for World Languages, was honored with the Emma Birkmaier Award. This award recognizes the lifetime achievements of an educator who has displayed outstanding service and support for world languages and cultures.

Retired St. Paul Public Schools German teacher and Board Member of the German Immersion School, Anita Ratwik, was honored with the MCTLC Professional Service Award, given to a retired educator.

The Early Career Award given to a first year world language teacher went to Mollie McMahon, Spanish teacher at Kingsland High School.

Bettina Villamil Grund was recognized as the 2012 Outstanding Student Teacher.

MCTLC gave the Pro-Lingua Award to Teatro del Pueblo in recognition of their support of world languages and cultures in the community.

Finally, six world language educators were recognized as STAR Award recipients for their professional development and study outside the classroom. This year’s STAR Award recipients were Barbara Koester (Foley High School), Kay Edberg (Mora High School), Adele Munsterman (Bethel University), Allison Spenader (College of St. Ben’s), Sue Nordquist (Rainy River Community College), and Brittney Rehm (Fargo North High School).
