Principals to report on students’ yearly progress

Monday will be the first Falls School Board meeting for new District 361 Superintendent Jeff Peura. The board is slated to meet at 5 p.m. Monday in the Falls High School cafeteria.

The name of school board member Stuart Nordquist appears on the agenda for his reinstatement as head boys football coach for the 2010-2011 season. Nordquist left the position for medical reasons in August 2009 after 34 seasons coaching the Broncos.

Shortly after Nordquist’s announcement to leave in August, there was some confusion among the board as to the terms of his leaving. Following the September appointment of Jay Boyle as the next head football coach, Nordquist requested a specific clarification as well as an amendment to the August meeting minutes in which Nordquist’s leaving was recorded as a resignation. Nordquist, backed by late board member Roger Jerome and board member Will Kostiuk, said the correct terminology should have been that he had been approved for a medical leave of absence.

After some friction between former Falls superintendent Don Langan and Nordquist, Jerome closed the discussion by saying that he didn’t think the issue would create a headache for the district “considering the integrity of the people involved.” The amendment of Nordquist’s football coaching status to a LOA was approved.

On the 2010-2011 personnel agenda Monday are the hiring of Marc Glowack and George McDonald as assistant boys hockey coaches; the increase of Angela Schwartz from .80 FTE to a full-time elementary teacher; the appointment of Brenda LeDuc as the district’s homeless liaison, and the appointment of Susan Karsnia as the election clerk for the November election. For approval also is the adoption of a resolution relating to the election of school board members and calling the school district general election.

School policy on FHS athletic lettering as it regards figure skating is scheduled to be discussed, with a potential for action.

A resolution relating to the renewal of Shawn Johnson, probationary teacher, is on the agenda.

High school Principal Tim Everson is expected to report on the district’s math class overload as well as Adequate Yearly Progress results. Elementary school Principal Jerry Hilfer will also report on AYP results. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment AYP is measured with benchmarks set by the No Child Left Behind program.

Peura is scheduled to report on summer van use.

A public comment period is available at every regular meeting of the Falls School Board.
