New this year is the Todd Chowan Memorial Scholarship
Recipients of scholarships to summer music camps have been announced by the members of Tuesday Musicale.
The group has been giving music awards since the club was organized in 1934, and in 1964 the club began awarding scholarships to summer music camp. To date, more than 190 students have been recipients of these scholarships.
Support and contributions from the community allowed the club to award six full scholarships to area music students this year. Recipients are: Tayler Hebner, Ben Sundin, Wyatt Helgeson, and Tess Vollom from Falls High School; Casey Meyers from Indus High School; and Nellya Simutkin from Littlefork-Big Falls High School.
Hebner, Sundin, Helgeson, Meyers and Simutkin will attend The North Shore Summer Music Experience camp at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Vollom will attend The International Peace Garden Music Camp in North Dakota.
For the first time this year, Tuesday Musical also awarded two Todd Chowan Memorial Scholarships. Donations from the family and friends of Chowan, an active musician who died in December, provided funds for the awards. Chowan received a Tuesday Musicale scholarship in 1979.
Cory Netland and Madison Foss were the recipients of the Todd Chowan Memorial Scholarships. Both will attend The North Shore Summer Music Experience camp.
The music camps provide an opportunity for students to play or sing in large groups and small ensembles, a statement explained. In addition, students receive private instruction from the music faculty.
Committee members said in the statement that “music is alive” in the Borderland area, as shown by the number of students who auditioned for the scholarships. Selection of recipients is a rewarding experience, although very difficult, it added.
