The South Koochiching - Rainy River School Board on Wednesday approved a preliminary 2013 levy that is a decrease of 21 percent from 2012.

The new numbers for the district, home to Indus and Northome Schools, propose a levy that is about $113,000 less than in 2012, according to Superintendent Jerry Struss.

The board also discussed steps for an upcoming superintendent search. Struss has been serving as an interim superintendent after his retirement. His contract ends at the end of this school year, June 30, 2013.

A special board meeting is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 24 to meet with a representative from the Minnesota School Board Association who specializes in superintendent searches. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Northome School library.

At the meeting, the board will start planning time lines for advertising the position and decide whether it wants to hire someone to conduct the search.

“There’s quite a few questions the board will have to answer in the next few months,” Struss told The Journal.

In other meeting business, the board approved the hire of Northome physical education and health teacher David Westerman.
