Indus cooks

The “cooks” talk about their side in the kindergarten through second grade musical performed at the Indus Spring Concert.

Indus School Report

The Indus School 2012 Spring Event May 4 featured a quilt and crafts show, baked potato supper fundraiser for Family and Consumer Sciences, and outstanding musical performances in a piano recital and concert with students in grades kindergarten through 12.

Piano teacher Candy Gates presented 20 students in a recital prior to the music concert. Her students included: Alexis Dawson, Abrianna Hasbargen, Yilikal Schiro, Hattie Ulrich, Eithne Sutton, Glenn Dawson, Nicholas Selberg, Katina Zook, Jacob Hasbargen, Danielle Erickson, Annie Schiro, Karl Zook, Mariah Leahy, Kerry Meyers, Holger Olesen, Casey Meyers, Krista Zook, Nathan Lewis, Sofia Olesen, Gary Hultman and Maria Lewis.

The spring concert began with a whimsical “Barnyard Moosical,” performed by students in kindergarten through second grade and written by Michael and Jill Gallina. Costumed students danced and pranced and sang heartily on the commons stage, directed by music teacher Nicholas Strandberg.

The “Moosical” was followed by third and fourth graders singing several favorites: “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Fifth-Ninth Street Bridge Song” and “The M.T.A. Song.”

An energetic fifth and sixth grade band performed “Macarena” and “Beethoven’s Ninth,” and then sixth grader Kerry Meyers and seventh grader Casey Meyers performed instrumental solos.

The Indus Choir, which received superior ratings at sub-sections this year, performed six selections, including: “Festival Sanctus,” “Domine Deus,” “Harambee!” “Lean on Me,” (with “We Shall Overcome”), “Wakati wa Amani” and “Rhythm of Life.”

The Indus High School band, which also did well at sub-sections, concluded the evening with four percussion pieces, “Mark Time,” “Strateejurie,” “Cucina Bella” and “Count de Monet.”

Piano accompanists for the evening included Elizabeth Strandberg and Janice Imes. The backdrop for the musical was painted by Indus choir members.
