Student in drug case expelled, early reinstatement denied

During a Thursday special meeting that seemed largely conducted by code, the Falls School Board rejected by 3-2 vote, a recommendation for the provisional reinstatement of an unnamed student whose expulsion had just been approved.

Board member Michelle Hebner was absent.

The board approved an expulsion period from Oct. 29, 2009 to Oct. 29, 2010 for the unnamed student’s involvement in a controlled substance incident on school grounds. Rejected by roll-call vote was an early March 26 reinstatement.

In attendance at the meeting were 18-year-old Falls High School student Tanner D. Hanson, Barb Hanson, Terry Thompson and attorney Steve Shermoen. They did not speak publicly.

Tanner Hanson of the Falls was arrested Oct. 8 and charged with felony sale of a controlled substance as was reported in The Daily Journal. Charged with felony possession of a controlled substance in the same incident were FHS students Blake A. Museta, 18, and Timothy L. Myles, 18.

No copy of the administration’s recommendation for a reinstatement agreement, with or without names, was available to The Daily Journal prior to or at the time of the meeting.

In other business, Gerald Bolstad was approved for hire as the new girls hockey head coach, and Kevin Erickson as the new assistant girls hockey coach. A motion for the final approval of the non-renewal of the previous girls hockey coach, Bruce Elson, was passed.

Approved also was the ratification of the 2009-2011 master agreement between the district and Local Union 4798.

In addition, the board approved the Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination. It also approved the designation of Superintendent Don Langan as the LEA (local education agency) representative to review and file the 2009-10 School Improvement Plan with the Minnesota Department of Education.
