Bob Anderson, former International Falls mayor, this week announced his candidacy for the open seat of mayor in the upcoming November election.

Anderson served 14 years as a city councilor, representing the East Ward, prior to being mayor from 1982-1986.

“Citizens have expressed concerns to me regarding the governance of our city and their desire to see change. With my experience, I believe I can lead that change,” Anderson said in a statement.

Anderson noted city crews have been cut and police officer positions eliminated in recent years in favor of other administrative positions. He said it would be his goal to restore them through a greater focus on the budgeting process.

“My vision for the city of International Falls is one of openness,” he said. “I want citizens to know what is happening and at what cost. I want to improve on basic city services and infrastructure. There are streets, alleys and sidewalks that need repair; playgrounds and parks that need upgrading. In addition, greater attention paid to services throughout the entire city. If you take care to deliver good services and have good infrastructure, most of the rest will take care of itself.”

Anderson has been active in community affairs for more than 40 years, including chairman of the airport commission for most of those years. He has served as chairman of the city of International Falls Charter Commission for several years. Anderson also serves as chairman of the Highway 53 Four-Lane Improvement Task Force and has organized the Fourth of July community celebration for more than 25 years. He also served as the chairman of the board of trustees of Falls Memorial Hospital.

In addition, Anderson has served as a union officer, is active in the chamber of commerce, local education foundations and on many non-profit boards and community committees.

“I believe we need a better working relationship with our county board, our neighbors in Ranier and citizens throughout our county,” Anderson said. “I know I can help the council in this direction.”

International Falls does not conduct a primary election. Election day is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Candidates may file for city positions until 5 p.m. Aug. 14.
