Several people could be seen doing yoga last month along Third Street during the Active Streets event. Active Streets, intended to encourage the community to get out and get healthy, featured yoga, street hockey, bicycle demonstrations, chalk art, basketball, disc golf and more. The next event is set for Aug. 13.

City streets will again be the scene of healthy outdoor activities when Active Streets returns to International Falls Aug. 13.

Healthy outdoor activities will include exercise instruction, street hockey, bicycle demonstrations, chalk art, puppet making and more, according to a release.

“This is the third and last of the Active Streets events planned for this summer,” said Nancy Lee, public health supervisor at Koochiching County’s Public Health and Human Services Department and chair of the organizing committee. “International Falls has joined a number of Minnesota communities that are encouraging healthy outdoor activity for all ages by closing thoroughfares and hosting fun activities.”

The intersection of Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue and one block in each direction will be closed to vehicles from 5 to 7 p.m., Lee said.

The event will again coincide with the Backus Community Market which runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and the Concerts in the Park series at the Pete Peterson Bandshell in Smokey Bear Park beginning at 7.

A free dinner will be offered at Backus Community Center in the dining room at 5.

All activities will move inside the Backus Community Center in the event of rain.

“We have had great participation from families with small children,” Lee said about the first two events,” adding, “At the same time, we want to encourage people of all ages and abilities to join us on Aug. 13.”

Active Streets, a project of the Koochiching County Public Health and Human Services Department and Healthy Northland, is made possible through support from the Statewide Health Improvement Program of the Minnesota Department of Health. Additional funding has been provided by the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
