The Community Summer Band will organize this summer with its sights set on performing in the local Fourth of July parade.

According to director John Faith, the original reason for the band was to provide a band for the parade, with a concert following at the Pete Peterson Bandshell in Smokey Bear Park.

Faith said this band has been in existence for more than 10 years and it is currently performing in the surrounding communities.

“During the summer, the band is larger and we perform at the bandshell for some concerts, at some businesses, and various group homes for older citizens,” Faith said. “During the winter months, we have a smaller group that gets together to practice and give concerts in The Dungeon (at Backus).”

The director said that anyone with at least one year of band experience can join the student-adult effort. He said for a fee of $30, interested participants can attend a rehearsal in The Dungeon. Rehearsals begin June 5 and run until July 2. Times are 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week. Musicians can attend one or both of the daily sessions, Faith said.

“It’s main purpose is to supply music for concerts and to provide music for the Fouth of July parade,” Faith said of the band. “The songs played are quite easy and sound nice. We have about 100 songs.”
