The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, or GCO, has been busy touring all over the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast and will be making a stop at Backus Community Center Saturday for the next show in the Backus concert series. The concert starts at 7 p.m.
In addition to Saturday’s concert, the Minneapolis-based band will perform outreach to five schools throughout Koochiching County.
The GCO started in 2008, when bassist, John Wright, wanted to create technically challenging, improvisation-based music, according to a news release. The band this year announced the addition of a new drummer, Billy Thommes.
From his humble beginnings playing in bar bands all over the upper Midwest, to performing in front of thousands in theaters, arenas and stadiums all over the world, the release said Thommes “has truly covered the spectrum as a performing drummer. Hard rock to blues, jazz to soul/funk, reggae to country, Billy’s rock solid versatility is his calling card.”
Admission for the event, made possible by a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, is $12 for adults; $6 for students; and $25 for families.
Tickets are available at City Drug, Betty’s in Fort Frances, the Backus office or Saturday at the door. Admission is also accepted with a Backus series season ticket.
