Student recipients of scholarships to summer music camp were announced by Tuesday Musicale members last week. Seven full scholarships were awarded to local area students.

Since the club began the program in 1964, more than 200 students have been recipients of these scholarships. With the support and contributions of local businesses, individuals, previous scholarship recipients, Tuesday Musicale members and musical showcase program fundraisers, students will be able to further their music education at summer music camp.

This year’s recipients are:

Falls High School - Abby Auran, piano; Sammy Maxwell, trumpet; Kerry Meyers, voice; Kendra Schmidt, flute; Remington Veillieux, bass clarinet; and Nick Lesch, cello.

Littlefork/Big Falls High School - Cora Gray, violin.

All seven students will attend the North Shore Summer Music Experience at the University of Minnesota/Duluth. The music camp, according to a release, provides an opportunity for students to play or sing in large groups and small ensembles. In addition, they receive private instruction from the music faculty.

Concerts and recitals are presented at the close of the camp and are open to the public. The camp’s director is Mark Whitlock.

Locally, scholarship recipients will perform at Backus Community Center during the sixth annual Borderland Musical Showcase during the 2014-2015 school year early in 2015. This concert will also showcase previous scholarship recipients and other music students from Borderland schools. The recital will be open to the public and is a fundraiser for the Tuesday Musicale scholarship program.

Scholarship committee members include Margarete Kostiuk, Mona Johnson, Sharalyn Schaak, Marcia Bringedahl, Jessie Laurion and Sarah Antanies.

In a release submitted by the committee, members said music is alive in the Borderland area, and while selection of recipients is difficult, it is a rewarding experience.

The audition committee was assisted by area music instructors Michelle Boelk, Tamara Koenig, Aron Bohnert, Stacey Ottemann and May Ann Kalar.
