In memory of a longtime member of the Borderland Community Orchestra, Bill McPherson, International Falls, who died at the age of 92 in 2012, the orchestra will present a concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Backus Community Center.
Under the direction of John Dutton, Fort Frances, and Katherine Williams, Emo, Ontario, the Borderland Community Orchestra, now in its 13th season, will feature selections from classic movies, show tunes and old time favorites. Ward Merrill will be Master of Ceremonies.
McPherson was one of the founding members of the BCO and played in the group’s cello section. In his honor, the orchestra will be heard in a special selection, “Rosamunde Overture” by Franz Schubert, one of McPherson’s favorites. He was also a member of the local Rainy Lake Community Orchestra since its beginning.
The orchestra was originally organized under the direction of Katherine Williams of Emo, and began as a group of about 30 musicians. It has since grown to a full orchestra of more than 50 members playing strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Musicians are from both sides of the border. Rehearsals take place weekly at the Donald Young School in Emo, with several concerts presented in the area during each concert season.
Admission to Tuesday’s concert is $5 for students, $10 for adults and $25 for families. Tickets are available at the door.
