The International Falls Public Library is gearing up for the second year of the “Pictures and Pens” program, and photographers and writers are needed.

Pictures and Pens is a monthly program that pairs photographs and stories. Each month, library officials are asking for writers to submit a short piece of writing — a poem, story, memoir or article of less than 1,000 words — and a winner will be selected.

The next month, officials ask local photographers to submit a photo to go with the writing and one winning photo will be selected.

Beginning this month, a release said writers can submit an original piece of writing, under 1,000 words with their name and contact information on the back, along with a submission form granting the library permission to use the writing. Submission deadline for writing is the 10th of each month.

One writing piece will be selected each month to receive a prize of $50. Writings not selected will be carried over to the following month. The winning author will be ineligible to win the next month, but can submit again after that. Winning author and writing will be announced on the first day of each month, beginning in June.

Beginning in June, photographers can view the winning writing and provide the library with a photograph to illustrate the piece. The photo submission deadline is the last day of each month. One photo will be selected to receive a prize of $50. The winning photographer will be ineligible to win the next month, but can submit after that.

Submission forms are available in the library and on the library blog at http://ifallslibrary.blogspot.com. The winning photos and stories will be posted on the library blog and will be available for viewing in the library. A book of winning entries will be created at the end of the year.

The program is partially funded through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council out of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
