Thuringer Salonquintett

Thuringer Salonquintett will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Backus Community Center.

In the tradition of the coffee houses of Europe, the Thuringer Salonquintett brings their combination of spontaneous musicality to the stage of the auditorium in the Backus Community Center at 3 p.m. Sunday. The performance is brought to the community through the Border Concert Association.

A release said the group is committed to the central-European tradition of light and entertaining music. Transcending the notions of classical and popular music, the quintet promises an evening of fun entertainment.

The Thuringer Salonquintett traces its roots back to 1974 in east Germany where the group achieved great recognition on the German-music scene. It first toured the United States in 1999, which included stops at Carnegie Hall and National Public Radio’s live one-hour broadcast of “Performance Today.”

Also included on that first tour were 17 concerts in the Midwest booked by Allied Concerts – the organization that works with the local BCA board.

The quintet is comprised of the usual Kaffehaus instrumentation of two violins, a cello, a bass and a piano. The group is renowned for their high-performance standards, the release noted. The combination and talent of the quintet has gained them a world-wide audience.

The group’s repertoire ranges from the Viennese Classics of the mid-1700s to waltzes, gallops and fantasies of the 19th century. It has also expanded to include some American favorites by Cole Porter and George Gershwin, as well as commissions by leading composers writing in current idioms.

Admission for the show is by season ticket only. Tickets are $45 for adults, $10 students and $95 for a family. Passes are available at City Drug, County Market, Backus, Betty’s, Northwoods Gallery & Gifts and the Fort Frances museum. Thuringer Salonquintett is the third of five shows that make up the BCA season.
