Student recipients of scholarships to summer music camp were announced by Tuesday Musicale members last week. Ten full scholarships were awarded to local area students.

According to a release, this is a record number of recipients since the club began the scholarship program in 1964. Since it began, more than 195 students have been recipients of these scholarships, the release said.

Members say the support and contributions of the Borderland community enable students to further their music education at several summer music camps.

Falls High School recipients include Clara Davis, piano; Hanna Kruse, voice; Sammy Maxwell, trumpet; Casey Meyers, voice; Kendra Schmidt, flute; Remington Veillieux, bass clarinet; and Tess Vollom, voice.

The Indus High School recipient was Holger Olesen, voice; and Littlefork-Big Falls High School recipient was Cora Gray, violin.

Students will attend camp at either the North Shore Summer Music Experience at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, the International Peace Garden Music Camp in North Dakota or a camp at North Central University in Minneapolis.

The music camps provide an opportunity for students to play or sing in large groups and small ensembles. In addition, they receive private instruction from the music faculty. Concerts and recitals are presented at the close of the camps and are open to the public, the release continued.

Scholarship recipients will perform at Backus Community Center at the Fifth Annual Borderland Musical Showcase during the 2013-2014 school year. This concert will also showcase previous scholarship recipients and other music students from Borderland schools. The recital will be open to the public and as a fundraiser for the Tuesday Musicale scholarship program.

Tuesday Musicale committee members Margarete Kostiuk, Mona Johnson, Sharalyn Schaak, Marcia Bringedahl, Jessie Laurion and Sarah Antanies say that music is alive in the Borderland area, as evidenced by the numbers who audition for this program. Selection of recipients is a rewarding experience, although very difficult, they said in a statement.

The audition committee was assisted by music instructors Michelle Boelk, Tamara Koenig, Kristine Schuldt, Aron Bohnert and May Ann Kalar.
