Briand Morrison, a solo jazz guitarist, will make his way to the International Falls Public Library at 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the Arrowhead Library System.
Audiences attending the free program, the release said, can expect to experience smooth, warm, and innovative music that will appeal to both jazz aficionados and anyone who loves good guitar.
Morrison has been playing guitar since he was 7 years old. In sixth grade, he was part of his first band playing piano, bass and guitar. By age 16, he was hired by the West Bank School of Music in Minneapolis as a rock guitar teacher.
Playing in a band and having the ability to play popular and rock tunes on guitar was a true joy to Morrison, the release continued, but thinking of music as an art form and being able to create a sound that was altogether original was an early dream.
Morrison then found a new challenge — jazz improvisation. A feeling of composing on the fly satisfied within his own mind his father’s notion that composing was a higher art form than playing.
To Morrison, jazz was more interesting because it was so much richer in every way: harmonically, rhythmically and melodically. This gave rise to more expression and color when playing and soloing. So much so that it continues to be tightly woven within his music interests and still shapes what he plays and listens to, the release said.
The musician of many talents will provide a solo jazz guitar program allowing the Borderland community to experience his music, song writing style, and maybe even learn some guitar playing tips.
