With Valentines Day just around the corner, a must-have for the holiday that celebrates love is the widely-popular treat — chocolate.
Ancient Aztecs were said to be the first to consume chocolate, which they considered a food fit for the gods. And early Europeans believed it could serve as both a medicine and love potion. All in all, not much has changed in the centuries-old love affair with the delectable treat.
Local chocolate connoisseurs can get their fix of the many variations of the cocoa bean from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday during the ninth annual “A Chocolate Affair” at Backus Community Center.
Chocolate lovers will have the opportunity to purchase gift boxes of chocolate specialties and candies, all made by Backus volunteers. Boxes come in three sizes at a cost of $5, $7 or $10. Also available is a sample plate of chocolates for $5 per plate.
In addition to purchasing chocolate for those on your Valentines Day list or treating yourself, shoppers can register to win decadent chocolate desserts and artistic chocolate creations donated by local chocolatiers.
The afternoon will also feature a luncheon to be served for the duration of the event in the Backus Dining Room. The cost is $10 per person and tickets are available at the door.
