Janet Tveit Aprill was awarded the Southern Atlantic Center for Veterans Education and Training Female Veteran of the Year in Columbus, Ga.
Aprill is the daughter of Lorne and Marlys Tveit of Jameson Addition, International Falls, and lives in Phenix City, Ala. She is past commander of Legion Post No. 35 in Columbus.
Aprill is very involved in community service and enjoys working with veterans, children and the community as a whole. As commander of Post No. 35, she encouraged the legion, auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion to host programs such as bringing Tuskegee Veterans Hospital patients to the post for dinner, karaoke and dancing. These activities allowed the veterans time away from a hospital setting.
She is the chairperson for Cancer Awareness Month and has hosted fundraisers and donated all proceeds to the John B. Amos Cancer Center.
She created the “Gong Show, Singing for the Babies,” which all donations for this project were presented to the Children's Miracle Network at the neonatal ward at the Columbus Regional Hospital.
Aprill has also been the president of the Columbus Outpatient Clinic for the VA clinic.
She has volunteered at the Southern Atlantic Center for Veterans Education and Training. She has also made appearances at 30th Avenue Elementary School to teach students about the flag, multi-ethnic projects and purchasing a set of school supplies for every student enrolled. She assists her local legion with all its programs which include: community Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas Day dinner for all veterans who do not have families, Easter Day dinner and Father's Day brunch.
