The Ice Box of the Nation chapter of AARP met at 1 p.m. Jan. 9 at Koochiching County Senior Center.

President Tom Wagner called the meeting to order and then turned the meeting over to Barb Owen-Boerger and Jennifer McKelvey, who are the director of community relations and marketing director for the Good Samaritan Society-International Falls. Their presentation was so very interesting and informative. They outlined the many wonderful changes that are being built into the new care center and the many changes that are being made in the “atmosphere of care” that residents will receive.

It was reported that several community presentations are planned in the near future, which should be well worth attending so everyone can receive current information. The plans for each private skilled care room (54) was passed around and the three assisted living houses with 24 private apartments was well explained. Currently, the care center has about 100 employees, however, that number may increase as the new center is ready. The big move in expected for late July or early August. The three assisted living buildings are the last scheduled to be built and will be located on the east side of the new construction — hopefully leaving room for a new hospital.

The membership voted a donation to the fun furnishing of the center — things like television sets, game machines, popcorn poppers and computers with internet and email capability.

Chapter officers remain the same for 2013-14, with the exception of Shirley Wagner , who has accepted the position of treasurer.

A lively discussion ensued about old construction techniques, the time a member found a herd of buffalo in front of her on the highway, as well as other interesting topics. Members do have an informative and fun time at each meeting.

A number of people paid up the very low dues, however, we continue to welcome all persons over the age of 50 to come and join the group.

Refreshments were served by Charlotte Saari.

Violet Johnson volunteered to host the next meeting, which set for 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at Koochiching County Senior Center.
