The Indus School Student Council, Birchdale, was announced as the Minnesota State winner of the Fuel Up to Play 60’s local Super Bowl Breakfast Challenge and was awarded with a Fuel Up to Play 60 branded piece of merchandise for the school cafeteria.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program created in partnership with Midwest Dairy Council and the National Football League that encourages students to eat healthy, be active and implement positive, healthy changes at school.

The Super Bowl Breakfast Challenge encouraged students to tell us their best idea for a tasty oatmeal breakfast that their friend at school would love. “We could not be more impressed by the 80 Challenge submissions sent in by students and schools across Minnesota,” said Lisa McCann, registered dietitian. “It is truly inspiring to see how these kids are making a difference in their health and at their schools.”

Indus School Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher and Student Council Adviser Lois Lewis says that students were excited about creating a new breakfast menu item because the school has recently started providing a breakfast program to students. When they were challenged to come up with a new idea that would include oatmeal, students agreed to try creating a pizza with oatmeal and apples. They developed an oatmeal crust, added cooked oatmeal to it, and topped it with cooked cinnamon-apple slices. They then added a drizzle of caramel and fat-free dairy topping. Finally, they taste tested it and analyzed the recipe for nutritional content, slightly revising it to be even healthier by reducing the sugar and fat content. Photos were taken of each step and a PowerPoint presentation was submitted to Fuel Up to Play 60 to enter the Challenge.

“We couldn’t be more excited and proud that our students accomplished — and won! — this challenge,” noted Lewis. “This is another step in helping students to internalize what healthy eating is about.”

There are a series Fuel Up to Play 60 Challenges that youth can get involved in throughout the year. Each Challenge focuses on a different aspect of the program and provides the opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers to showcase what they have learned about “fueling up” with nutrient-rich foods and getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. By completing Challenges, students get the chance to have their submission featured in the Challenge Showcase on the national Fuel Up to Play 60 website and earn exclusive online badges and rewards for the participation on FuelUpToPlay60.com. Students can also win local rewards, like an NFL Player to visit their school.
