Two Rainy River Community College volleyball players have been named to the 2011 Minnesota College Athletic Conference’s Northern All-Division first team following voting by the eight division schools.

Libero Kelly Sorensen received the fifth-highest vote total among the eight first-team players selected.

Going into this weekend’s Region 13B tournament, Sorensen, a sophomore from Roseau, had ranked second in the Northern Division in digs per game at 4.89 with 465 digs over 95 games.

Hitter Haylee Gates received the seventh-highest vote total of the first-team players.

Gates, a sophomore from Big Falls, led Northern Division players in serving aces per game at .6 with 57 aces over 95 games. She also ranked fifth in kills per game at 3.13 with 297 total kills.

The first team’s top vote-getter and Player of the Year is Northland’s Jessica Fontes, who ranked second in both kills per game (4.03) and blocks per game (1.32) and led the Northern Division in attack percentage (.498).

The other five players who made the Northern All-Division first team include Jessica Dvergsten of Itasca, Morgan Hanson of Mesabi Range, Melissa Widman of Central Lakes, Eiley Berg of Northland and Jenna Zmyslony of Hibbing.
