In honor of World Book Night tonight, the local Little Free Library crew announces new locations of the wooden, windowed boxes full of books for all ages.
The libraries work on a honor system and sport a sign “Take a Book, Leave a Book,” and readers of all ages can borrow a book to read and return, as well as leave a book of their own. The idea started almost two years ago when local authors got together to launch the project locally.
The 2014 Little Free Library locations include:
- Ranier Community Building
- Ranier Park
- County Road 20
- The Coffee Landing
- Riverside Park
- Shorewood Drive Park
- Roller rink near South Falls
According to Lindsey Goulet, who serves as a steward for the Ranier locations, a library that was located at City Beach was relocated to Ranier Park because books were not returned.
“As a reminder for these Little Free Libraries to work, we need people taking and returning books,” she said. “A constant refreshing of books keeps people coming back.”
She added the libraries have received book donations from Never Ending Consignment and Buy-Sell-Trade. But, the libraries are still in need of donations – especially children's books – to stock each location this spring. Book donations can be brought to The Coffee Landing or Bill “Huntz” and Marlene Wagner's home at 3232 County Road 20.
“Once the Little Free Libraries are installed, readers are encouraged to fill them with books and share a piece of themselves with their neighbors through books,” Goulet said. “Notes on the inside cover of books or reasons why you liked the book are encouraged.”
