Minnesota Rep. Rob Ecklund announced last week he will seek reelection to the House seat to which he was elected to in December.

Ecklund was elected in a special election Dec. 8 to finish the term of the late state Rep. David Dill, DFL – Crane Lake, serving the communities of Cook, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties in northern Minnesota.

“While it seems like just yesterday I was elected, I know that there is still more work to do for Minnesotan families,” said Ecklund, DFL – International Falls, in a news release. “My first priority is extending unemployment benefits for families on the Iron Range as quickly as possible in the first days of session.”

The Legislature convenes March 8.

Edklund said he will over the course of the session focus on securing more funding for schools and expanding opportunities for the youngest learners by increasing funding for pre-kindergarten programs.

“We need to expand broadband so more businesses can compete in a 21st century economy, and so our students can get a first rate education,” he said. “For northern Minnesota to succeed, we must provide more aid to our cities, townships and counties that deliver the services that most Minnesotans deal with day-to-day.”

The filing period opens May 17 for positions involved in the state primary and general election.
