15 YEARS AGO

Nadine Mayer was among 49 Koochiching County 4-Hers who constructed rockets as part of the aerospace theme of 4-H All County Project Day. The day brought 4-Hers and 15 adult volunteers to the International Falls Airport for tours and to construct rockets. The rockets, made of plastic bottles, tape and cardboard, were launched with an air compressor, some reaching speeds of 20 miles per hour.

25 YEARS AGO

A group of about 80 senior citizens met on Tuesday at the Koochiching County Senior Center to celebrate the 20th anniversary of weekday lunches served at the center by Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency. Chris Polus, AEOA site manager and senior center director, said that the nutritious meals are only part of the program’s value to the elderly.

40 YEARS AGO

Falls freestyler Julie Larson strained home in the individual medley during the Broncos’ 124-52 romp over Greenway. Broncos took first in all 11 events in the dual meet at the Falls natatorium.

50 YEARS AGO

Nearly 70 miles of pipe needed for artificial ice-making has been installed in the new arena. The new arena is nearing completion. Outside work by the general contractor has been slowed somewhat by muddy conditions at the site. The school board is hopeful that the arena will be ready for the opening game on Dec. 13 when the Broncos entertain Ely.

60 YEARS AGO

Tom Riley, former Bronco puck star, has been named co-captain of the University of Minnesota hockey team. He was selected along with Gary Alm, Minneapolis Roosevelt at a squad meeting last week.

70 YEARS AGO

A Fort Frances ranger has cited the danger created by smoking in the woods. Chief Ranger William A. Darby, of Fort Frances, asserted that timber lands were the driest he’s seen in his 40 years in the Ontario section of the Rainy River district.

Dr. C.C. Craig was named as acting chief of staff of Falls Memorial Hospital. He succeeds the late Dr. M. E. Withrow who passed away earlier this month.
