15 YEARS AGO

The future of the International Falls pulp and paper mill looks bright under new ownership, according to local mill manager Terry Ward. Boise Cascade Corp. announced Monday that it plans to sell its paper, forest products and timberland assets for about $3.7 billion to Boise Cascade, L.L.C., a new private company formed by Madison Dearborn Partners, of Chicago. The sale includes the International Falls mill, the Minnesota, Dakota and Winnipeg Railroad, and 308,000 acres of land owned or controlled by Boise Cascade in Minnesota. The sale is expected to be completed by mid-November.

25 YEARS AGO

City Drug Store employees Sandy Hoopman, Deana Pavleck and Cheryl Haak dressed as Smokey the Bears today during the Crazy Daze sidewalk sales. Another individual sporting crazy costumes as part of the celebrations was Marian Wagner of Specialty Dress Shop in a wig of blonde tresses that trailed to the ground. Stan Rutkas’ Three-Piece Band played songs for bargain hunters at the International Mall.

40 YEARS AGO

Traffic was stopped for two and one-half hours on Thursday while the bridge over the Big Fork River on Highway 71 north of Big Falls was moved to a new location. The bridge, located on the north edge of town, is being replaced. It was moved approximately 100 feet upstream to serve as a bypass while a new structure is built. The new bridge, when completed, will be 15 feet higher than the present structure and over 400 foot long. Cost for the project is listed at $1.38 million.

50 YEARS AGO

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Falls Memorial Hospital were conducted under sunny skies at the site adjoining Falls Nursing Home. Among the persons who broke ground for the hospital was Mrs. Charles B. Will, widow of the late Dr. Will, an ardent worker for a new hospital here. Others who broke ground were Congressman John Blatnik; Francis Hobbins, chairman of the hospital board; Mayor Robert Bennett and Alec Kaviuk of the City Council; Earl Bolin of the board of county commissioners; and Dr. F.H. Walter.

60 YEARS AGO

The Falls High School band, under the direction of Irving Peterson, won the grand championship at the state Loyal Order of the Moose convention Saturday for the second consecutive year. The band placed first in competition with over 30 bands in the Saturday parade and won the first place cash prize of $100 as they marched in 90-degree temperatures.

70 YEARS AGO

Regular weekly training assemblies of 447 Engineer Forestry battalion will be resumed in the organizations quarters in the Mando logging division building. Two officers and 12 enlisted men of the unit have returned after two weeks of intensive training at Camp McCoy, Wis. During tonight’s meeting camp activities will be reviewed. Lessons learned during the two weeks of training will be incorporated into the schedule for the balance of the year.
