Holler School cooks Elaine Goulet and Jean Sullivan will be sorry to say good-bye to the school. Holler School will close next week after 51 years of teaching and feeding students. Head Cook Goulet has been with the district for 24 years; Sullivan has worked for the Falls school district for 14 years. “Between the two of us, we have fed most of the people of International Falls at one time or another,” Goulet said.
25 YEARS AGO
Kelly Santine, daughter of Neva and Emil Santine, graduated from the College of St. Catherine in Minneapolis with a master’s degree in physical therapy. Santine will be working in the physical therapy department at Falls Memorial Hospital.
Jason Johnson, son of Charles and Judy Johnson, of Ranier, recently participated in commencement ceremonies at St. John’s University, where he received a degree of bachelor of arts in management.
40 YEARS AGO
The Broncos’ Todd Pavleck gave the hometown crowd something to cheer about when he posted a new region and track record in the shot put at the Region Seven AA track and field meet. Pavleck was one of six Falls athletes who qualified for the state meet that will take place Friday and Saturday in Cottage Grove. The others are: Tina Bahr and Dave Blake in the 1600 meters; Jeanne Blais in the high jump; Anne Tarro in the 800 meters and Arlys Johnson in the shot put.
50 YEARS AGO
The 35th anniversary spring banquet of Tuesday Musicale was held at Island View Lodge. Thirty members were present, along with guests (charter members) Mrs. R.O. Evans, Mrs. J.J. Hadler, and Mrs. Bernard Talsness, who is presently a member, and former members Mrs. Bertram Talsness and Mrs. Ronald Laurion. Mrs. A.R. Wilson, another charter member, was serving on the election board and was unable to be present.
60 YEARS AGO
Forty border city Army reservists will push off from their Armory Building, 303 Seventh St., at 8 a.m. Saturday for Fort McCoy, Wis., and two weeks of training. Their four-truck military convoy, augmented by a number of private passenger vehicles, will travel to Chisholm to pick up 12 more members affiliated with the Falls unit, plus another truck and more passenger vans. The convoy will proceed to Rice Lake, Wis., where arrangements have been made to bailiwick the outfit overnight at the Barron County fairgrounds.
70 YEARS AGO
Down the Years with Pioneers: Hale and hearty despite his 86 years, pioneer Mike Carew of Indus is looking forward to a birthday party at his farm home. Relatives will drive out to the old homestead to pay their respects to the head of a family that has played an important part in the development of Rainy River valley. In 1912, Carew and some of his boys took the contract to clear ground for the new consolidated school at Indus. Since coming to the township of Manitou, Carew has held many offices of public trust, including town assessor and justice of the peace. The Carews have had a dairy farm since the cooperative creamery started.
