Another company has indicated interest in Koochiching County peat moss.

Mike Hanson, chairman of the Koochiching Development Authority Board, said Tuesday that Annapolis Valley Peat Moss of Nova Scotia, Canada, is expected to visit privately owned land near Big Falls Oct. 18 and 19.

Earlier he reported that in the past months there have been four Canadian companies looking at a 1,200-acre privately-owned parcel which contains sphagnum peat moss that could be developed for horticultural uses.

“There’s still interest in developing peat,” Hanson said.

Last month, Hanson reported that Berger Peat Products, the developer of the Pine Island Horticultural Peat Project near Big Falls, has contracted for clearing an additional 50 acres of the permitted site.

Meeting as the county board, commissioners Tuesday heard about open house meetings planned for Oct. 29 through Nov. 5 at 11 locations by Great Northern Transmission Line within the corridor of a proposed transmission line between from the Minnesota-Canada border to the Iron Range.

Commissioners agreed that attendance by a board member would be valuable to better understand the proposed route of a 500k V high-voltage transmission line.

The meetings are intended for county and city representatives to help identify opportunities and constraints of the location of the proposed transmission line, according to a letter to commissioner Rob Ecklund by Great Northern Transmission Line.
