Property owners in Borderland may be receiving in the mail notices that appear to be coming from a local government.
Pam Rooney, Koochiching County recorder, told The Journal that, similar to last year, a company is sending notices to property owners that appear to be sent by a local government. However, the company is based in St. Paul.
The notice encourages property owners to mail in $89 for a copy of their deed.
“They do state a few times they are not associated with any governmental agency — but sometimes we don’t read the entire page and it’s misleading because they mention ‘LOCAL RECORDS OFFICE’ a number of times, and ‘COUNTY PUBLIC INFORMATION’ — they also show tax statement information — looks official,” states Rooney.
Rooney notes that most property owners can get a copy of their deed for $1 per page, adding that most deeds would cost just $1 or $2 from the Koochiching County Recorder’s Office in the courthouse. Certified copies cost $10, she noted.
“Most people already have the originals anyway and don’t need to come purchase a copy,” she said. “They really don’t need a copy unless maybe they’re selling their land, for example.”
