I’ve been loosely following the news story regarding the recent arrests over what appears to be a substantial marijuana growing operation down in the Duluth area. It certainly sounds like good police work and I commend the hard work of those officers involved. However, as examine the motivation of those arrested and the professional law officers enforcing the current laws of the state - I have to question the reality of how this effort (on both sides) balances with those on the left coast who will be voting to legalize this commodity in November for personal use. Can anyone else see the irony here? I suppose you could use the analogy of the former drinking age laws among the states. Some made it legal to consume at 18 (As it was when I was that age) and others that restricted the age to 21. Now based on the federal government limiting funding (as well as hard evidence of the adverse effects from lower aged drinking) states are all (as far as I know) using the 21 years as the legal age to purchase alcohol. That said the issue of legalizing marijuana certainly is an interesting red herring. I know the marijuana growers in northern California (Humboldt County in particular) are now getting very nervous that their profits will dwindle if the law passes and ma & pa start their own personal use gardens. On the right coast (“Right” being used strictly as a metaphor here) the entire population will be walking around like zombies if legalization ever becomes a reality. I happen to know this isn’t actually true (the zombie part). In fact I know plumbers, dentists, mayors, county commissioners, US Senators, doctors, soldiers, store owners, scientists, college professors, electronic technicians, entertainers, little old ladies, sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, and high school teachers that have experimented with the effects of this plant and have gone on to lead very successful lives. Difficult to talk to your children about? You bet. Is it going to get any easier? No way…
