It’s here! The exhibit, “Here, There, Everywhere” is at the library through Jan. 3, 2013. This exhibit explores six science concepts on a molecular, global and universal level. The six concepts are explained on large panels displayed in the library. We also have a set of activities to go with the exhibit and will be putting out a different activity each day we are open.

“Here, There, & Everywhere” (HTE) is supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and consists of a series of exhibitions, posters and supporting hands-on activities that utilize analogies in the teaching of science, engineering, and technology (STEM) to provide multi-generational and family-friendly content to small communities.

The purpose of the program is to connect cross-cutting science content in Earth and planetary science and astrophysics with everyday phenomena, helping to demonstrate the universality of physical laws and the connection between our everyday world and the universe as a whole. HTE was developed by the Chandra X-Ray Center, at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass.

The Duluth Children’s Museum has the exhibit “Storyland: a trip through childhood favorites” currently showing through Jan. 20, 2013. The library has free tickets available. So if you will be traveling to Duluth in the next six weeks or so and have time to visit their Children’s Museum, stop by and pick up some tickets. Many of these shows have limited tickets, but we’ve been told that there are unlimited tickets available so if we run low, we’ll ask for more.

We also have tickets for the Duluth Playhouse performance of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. Jan. 24-27, 2013. If you are interested in attending a performance please stop in the library and pick up some tickets. We only have a few and you will need to call and reserve seats ahead of time.

The library is improving our science materials available for families to borrow. We have several new movies, including many episodes of Bill Nye Science Guy and Disney’s Imagineering. These DVDs are shelved in the junior room of the library with the books on the same subject. So the next time you are trying to explain atoms, probability or even simple machines to a kid, be sure and borrow one of our videos.

We are adding science kits that can use used over and over, so no chemistry sets with chemicals that would need replacing. We are starting off with three sets of snap circuits. These kits help teach basic circuitry and come with a teacher guide, student guide and two project manuals. At the moment they also come with rechargeable batteries. As we add additional kits needing batteries, we will check out batteries separately. Each kit can check out for one week. We’re working on adding a marble run kit and have also added the Disney Roller Coaster Ride Builder. This is an online program that you access with a code. The library has purchased 100 codes for any interested children.
