Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are all thankful for your local public library which provides you with books, magazines, movies, programs, and lots of electronic access. If you’d like to know more about what we are able to offer, please stop in and talk to me. I’d love to share what we are doing and what we have available for the community to borrow.
The library is making use of a couple of grants to bring in some exciting, fun, educational exhibits beginning next month. “Here, There, Everywhere” is an exhibit created by Harvard University, the Chandra X-Ray Center/Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and NASA that explores physics present at the molecular level, on earth and in space. We will have the exhibit from Dec. 6 -Jan. 4. Come discover something new at your library. Then in January 2014 (so not for another year) we are hosting “Discover Tech” for eight weeks. This museum quality exhibit will explore the world of technology and engineers. I’ll share plenty more information on that exhibit in the year to come.
As a result of the upcoming exhibits, our strategic plan and a desire to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) along with the community college and high school, the library is in the process of improving our collection relating to those subjects. We will be adding some science kits that educators and students can borrow and use to learn simple concepts. We have already added an online resource called “The Science of Disney Imagineering Roller Coaster Ride Builder.” If you have a computer with internet access at home, or want to use one of our computers here, you can ask in the junior room for a personal access code to the program. We have purchased 100 codes (and will purchase more, if there is a need). The program is geared for children ages 10 and up, but we will provide codes to adults and younger children as requested.
Keep an eye out for our new Disney educational DVDs as well. These educational science movies will be available for checkout soon. So if you want to learn more about gravity, motion, comets, inventions and lots more, then keep your eyes peeled for these movies. And teachers are welcome to borrow for class use as well. Please contact me, if you need assistance in determining what is available and/or would like them for a specific date.
The library will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 22, so library staff can celebrate Thanksgiving with their families. Regular hours will resume on Friday, Nov. 23. The Friends of the Library will be participating in the Backus Holiday arts and crafts fair on Saturday, Nov. 24, as part of the non-profit agencies shared table, generously provided by Backus.
Monday, Nov. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Backus Auditorium the library’s documentary movie night will be showing “War Redefined.” The movie looks at the impact women are having on war and peace. Discussion and refreshments follow the screening. Join us.
