I hope everyone found plenty of reading material under their Christmas tree. If not, swing on in to the library and browse our shelves. We have great reading material for everybody. This is also the last week of the exhibit “Here, There, Everywhere.” Don’t miss it.
It is hard to believe that almost all of 2012 is past and 2013 is just around the corner. Crafty Tuesdays continue with a craft project put out in the junior room for kids and families from 3:30 to 7:30 every Tuesday. Make coming to the library a New Year’s resolution for your family!
Storytime will start up again on Thursday, Jan. 3, at 10:30 a.m. Join library staff for 20 to 30 minutes of stories, songs and rhymes around a central theme each week. In January we’ll start by celebrating Tabitha the storytime cat’s birthday followed by two weeks of winter stories. We’ll end the month with two weeks of stories about clothes.
Great Decisions, the local foreign policy discussion group will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 4 p.m. to talk about Indonesia. All are welcome to come and listen, learn, discuss and participate in these discussions.
The Friends of the Library monthly book sale will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. All sales are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programs. The Northwoods Shutterbugs will meet the next evening on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m.
The On the Edge film festival is Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at Backus Auditorium This annual festival of independent films will cost $2 admission along with a donation for the Food Shelf. Stay tuned for more information in the weeks to come.
Doug Ohman will present Minnesota Byways on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. He will talk about his travels for this book series that includes Cabins of Minnesota, Churches of Minnesota, Courthouses of Minnesota and more. He has traveled much of the state in search of iconic, unusual, terrific and fun photos.
Monday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Backus Auditorium will be our documentary movie and discussion night. We have a wonderful opportunity to show “It’s a Girl” a brand new movie. This film, shot in India and China reveals why so many girls are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls are missing in the world today because of this so-called gendercide. We will be the first location in Minnesota to air this film. Come be a part of the movement to spread the word.
The writers’ group will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the library meeting room to share, support, and encourage writers of all ages, abilities and levels. Be sure and check out the picture for the monthly writing contest. Deadline is the last Wednesday of the month.
The library will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, and remain closed until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. Happy New Year!
