The holiday season should be a time to reflect on the past and shape hopes and dreams for the future.

As we approach Christmas, The Journal would like to offer its holiday wishes. And while these aren’t the kinds of wishes that will be fulfilled in a box under the tree, they are on our list for Santa.

We wish clear direction for and good decisions by President Barack Obama and Congress as they struggle to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff and work to get our economy back on track.

We wish for the safety and return home of all our troops who are working hard to carry out their missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places around the world.

We wish for a fruitful and positive experience in Congress by the Minnesota delegation, and success to Rep.-elect Rick Nolan, in working to improve the status of the nation and representing the people and needs of Minnesota and the 8th District.

We wish for a productive legislative session for our newly elected state lawmakers, Sen. Tom Bakk and Rep. David Dill, that will provide for and protect Borderland residents and their needs.

We wish for clarity and insight for our local, state and federal leaders into how to improve the economy and create jobs in Borderland.

We wish for our newly elected councilors and commissioners a quick understanding of the issues important to our community and insight into how to improve our local economy.

We wish for cooperation and mutual understanding between our local government representatives that encourages a reduction in stress for our leaders, and most importantly, healthy discussions and beneficial decisions.

We wish for a successful school year with enough money and staff to fill the needs of all Borderland students.

For pets without a forever home, we wish for loving adopters and the continued commitment of the dedicated volunteers of the Borderland Humane Society.

We wish for continued success as the Good Samaritan Society of International Falls moves forward with construction that will provide improved residential care as we grow older.

For those in need of spiritual nourishment, we wish for healthy churches and organizations that bring the warmth of care and concern.

We wish for places that have warm beds and for nourishing food for those among us that have no place to call home or food to put on the table.

We wish that the spirit of the holidays and the joy of community that is felt at the Community Christmas Dinner at the Roadhouse Tuesday is contagious and lasts in each of us the whole year.

And for the Borderland community in general, we wish for new businesses that bring good paying jobs and continued growth and prosperity for the Boise Inc. paper mill.

We wish for snow and ice for those who enjoy it, and mild winter temperatures for those who don’t.

And for all of us, we wish for a healthy and prosperous year.
