Monday marks Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember all the men and women who died in military service for the United States.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day as a day to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

But there are those among us who have also given to our nation through their military service. These people, too, ought to be in our thoughts always, but also on this special day.

The veterans of World War II gave so much for so many, it’s time for us to give a little to them. Three local veterans recently took part in a Northland Honor Flight to Washington D.C. where they could view and reflect upon the memorials commemorating their part in our nation’s history.

Every veteran of WWII deserves this trip. The Honor Flights are provided to the veterans free of charge through donations.

Terry Randolph, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2948, helped coordinate the trip for the local veterans and veteran Kathy Sikkila, county veterans service officer, served as a guardian on the recent trip, paying the costs of her trip out of her own pocket.

These two veterans deserve credit for helping our local vets to participate in the Honor Flight. And they urge any WWII veterans, or families of veterans, in the county to contact them if they would like to take part in upcoming trips.

Anyone wishing to contribute money to assist in the costs of upcoming trips for local veterans may do so at the Falls Honor Flight account at Trustar Federal Credit Union or by contacting Randolph at 286-3099.

It’s time to pay these people back for the sacrifices they have made for each of us. These trips can only be made possible by donations. There is no more fitting way to pay tribute to Memorial Day and our local vets by making a donation to ensure that our WWII veterans are able to visit our nation’s Capitol and view these memorials.
