The votes have been cast and the ballot booths taken down.

Now, the real work begins for the candidates who have become our leaders. Regardless of the outcome of any of the elections, we urge a sense of cooperation and collaboration with others.

After all, we’re all in this together and the only way to move forward toward a healthier, brighter future is with positive thinking and movement.

Clearly, there are some among us who are disappointed in the outcomes of the 2012 elections. It’s these people who we urge not to give up. Instead, we ask them to get involved in local governments and committees and work toward bringing the changes you had hoped for in the elections to these local governments.

And for those of us who feel satisfied with the outcome of the elections, your work is not completed, either. You must now step up to the plate, as well, to bring about the future you believe is the right course.

Tuesday’s elections represent a basic step in democracy in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. But that’s the not where the responsibility ends; it’s just the beginning. There are plenty of committees, organizations and groups that help to guide our elected leaders toward making rules, policies and laws. It’s up to you to volunteer to continue to play a role in this great democracy.

Kudos to all — voters and candidates — who played a role in this very important step toward the future.
