Call it science day or outdoor education day — either way Falls High School students are benefiting greatly by the event.

Not only do students have the opportunity to learn about and use the natural wonders and resources in our backyard, but they also gain valuable insight by being paired with students in another grade for the day’s activities.

Kudos to teachers, administrators and others involved for giving our students these experiences that will last a lifetime.

Voyageurs National Park draws visitors from across the world, and yet for some in our community, the nation’s only water-based park and Minnesota’s only national park may as well be in another state. They simply don’t have the ability or knowledge needed to take advantage of the resources offered by the park. The day gives students a chance to see the park, learn about its history and gain knowledge from park experts.

In addition, the activities both at the park and the school provide students with the opportunity to take part in activities, such as boat safety and canoeing, that they can use throughout their lifetimes.

And just as important is the idea of pairing seventh graders with 10th graders for the day. These can be long-lasting friendships that will benefit students of both grades, with the older students learning how to serve as a mentor, and the younger students gaining insight into maturity and the events coming in their future.

These opportunities will be among those that FHS students won’t forget.
