While we strive to have a diversified economy in Borderland, we know the International Falls paper mill and the jobs associated with it plays an integral role in our community.

We must never take that for granted.

That sentiment became more clear after we learned of the Verso Paper Corp. mill explosion and fire in Sartell that killed one person and injured four others on Memorial Day.

The huge fire was handled by 14 area fire departments, several local and state law enforcement agencies, and the Red Cross in an effort that showed teamwork and support.

And while the fire was still burning, the city of Sartell had received offers of help from nearby communities, and area lawmakers and Gov. Mark Dayton were planning a visit.

As we know, operating a paper mill in this economic environment presents many challenges. Last year, Verso eliminated 175 jobs and mothballed part of the facility in an effort to make it stronger and more viable. And now this.

As members of a paper mill community, we must first extend our support to the family of the man killed and those that were injured, as well as to the many emergency workers who helped.

We know that Verso leaders are assessing the plant’s potential to move forward, and we hope they are able to tackle the new challenges involved in operating a severely damaged paper mill. We’re sure that tough decisions are being made as they consider the long-term future of the 100-plus year old mill that serves as a main employer for the community’s 16,000 people.

We hope for the best for all involved, because when one business in Minnesota fails, we all suffer from the loss of jobs for Minnesotans and property taxes that help pay for our services.

From one Minnesota mill town to another: Good luck to Verso, its employees and the community of Sartell.
