Why start from scratch when you can learn from someone’s success?

That’s the premise for a promising new series of events taking shape in International Falls.

A panel of local business owners will share their insights on success at the first “International Falls Works” event. The event is the beginning of a series of events exploring business-related opportunities, and will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 19 at the Backus Community Center dining room. The event is free to the public, but registration is required by Thursday.

Sharing success stories, and the challenges and barriers to that success, with others in our community is a smart way to encourage local entrepreneurs.

The city’s Economic Development Authority and the Koochiching Economic Development Authority deserve credit for developing the idea for the International Falls Works events and carrying them through to fruition.

Organizer Jenny Dougherty, business consultant for the Small Business Development Center, said that many of her clients face similar challenges when starting business. There’s no better way to find out how to overcome the hurdles than hearing from someone else who has experienced them.

And Cynthia Jaksa, Falls councilor and member of the city’s EDA, makes perfect sense when she says that the city’s health and the wellbeing of residents is closely connected with the success of our community’s businesses.

Clearly, this event, and hopefully others to come, will provide valuable information for new business owners and people considering starting a business.

Kudos to those involved in developing what we hope is just the first in a series of International Falls Works events.
