To the editor,
Perhaps the most passionate debate being held in Minnesota during this election is the proposed marriage amendment, “shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?”
If this amendment should pass, it is telling committed same sex couples that they will never have the same rights as heterosexual couples in Minnesota, that their union will never be recognized as “valid.” Approximately 10 percent of people are born gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT). Are we willing to take the chance on losing citizens of Minnesota to more progressive states because we are a state that selectively denies equal rights for all?
If this amendment should pass, it is telling children and adolescents who are in the GLBT community that their sexual orientation will always make them “different,” that they will never have the same rights as their heterosexual peers in Minnesota. Transitioning through childhood and adolescence is already tough but GLBT youth are also at risk for bullying and violence because of their sexual orientation. According to studies, at least one-third of teens who commit suicide are gay. Do we want an amendment to our Constitution that may add to the social stigma these youth face every day?
If this amendment should pass, it will not stop same sex couples from forming committed relationships and raising families. But it will deny them the right to marry the person he or she loves. It will deny them the stability that marriage provides. Marriage should be about love, commitment and public accountability and not the gender of those who enter into it.
If this amendment should pass it will not make a one man/one woman marriage any stronger nor will it make better fathers.
A no vote will not change the fact that same sex couples are unable to legally marry, however it will allow for further discussion on the subject.
Please vote no to the marriage amendment. Vote no to ensure equal rights for all. Vote no for the welfare of our children and our society. Vote no for a Minnesota united for all families.
