As Americans sit in their comfortable homes, surfing the Internet on their state-of-the-art computers, there are still human beings that are trapped in slavery.
In 1981 the African desert country of Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish slavery. It was only in 2007 that the nation made slavery a crime and only one slave owner has been successfully prosecuted, according to CNN.com.
Internet reading will provide ample stories of the inhumane treatment slaves experience from their masters, as well as the reasons it's still happening. An escaped slave said she was living like an animal with the animals.
What do you think? America is quick to jump up and defend oil rich nations in the name of the greater public good. What about defending basic human rights in a land of nothing but sand ....?
