It seems to me, after reviewing the accomplishments and failures of many endeavors in our community, that we who call this place home have much to be thankful for and proud of in the last year. The year started with much fanfare over the loss of our moniker, "Ice Box of the Nation", the changing of the name of our beloved winter celebration to something having to do with a blast somewhere and the Mayor traveling to places in the west with a desire to effect some advertising for our region with the aid of a moose and his sidekick. Our schools roof was leaking (and the ever present force called gravity was exerting its influence on the roof) and there existed arguements on the "burner road", the ever unwanted National Park next door, the presentation of Hwy 53 coming into town and various issues dealing with "new business" and jobs. I had desired for the current Mayor to write this message, however, due to her busy schedule and the fact that I am actually the real Burgermeister of International Falls, she has gracefully allowed me the honor, for which I am thankful. The first signs that things were going favorably was the Mayors iniatiative to beautify the city. This seems to have worked very well as many old buildings were torn down, many cars and appliances were removed and much lawn mowing and painting was accomplished to actually make a noticeable improvement in town which all residing here and many visitors noticed also. The "all class reunion" was absolutely great in every regard. I have heard no adverse remarks on the various celebrations that occured and all enjoyed the street dance. The Backus management group has nearly reached the goal of roofing the old building and has requested bids for such, started a Saturday "market" in the parking lot and conducted various activities in the building attended well by all. The "Bass Tournament" went well again and the Wednesday concerts were very well received and attended by many who enjoy the music. A new business came to town( not yet opened), a new dollar store came to town and we have finally got another car dealership in town. As much as some of us dis-like the "park", the park service did announce a rather large increase in campsites to be built which although most of us do not use, it should allow more outsiders to be able to be here and help our economy. We enjoyed a very fine 4th of July celebration and fireworks and also a very nice Christmas parade and "Ice Box Days" celebrations and to include the "freeze your gizzard runs and the 100 plus mile ride, ski, walk trek on Febuary 4th. The fire department and Sheriff departments have much equipment to handle various emergencies ( to much equipment) and seem to respond well in all instances to include the latest school incident. Well I guess what I am saying is, our taxes are to high due primarily to excessive social services but our city has done a very good job in the last year and we actually have a lot to be happy and proud about. I feel good about the "State of our City"!!! As your Burgermeister I would add, "lets build on what we accomplished last year and see if we can't do more and better in this coming year". I feel good!!
