Jackie Briggs took these photos of a robin’s transformation from egg to life at her home just east of International Falls. Briggs reports that she spotted the empty nest on a swing set in her backyard in May and took photos of the eggs sometime toward the end of June. The birds, she said, were born July 2. It takes an egg about 12-14 days after it is laid to hatch. While it appears that only two of the three eggs hatched, Briggs notes she was careful to only take photos while the mother was gone.
Most robin clutches during their first nesting season have three or four eggs, according to learner.org website. Very rarely there are five, but this most often happens when a robin lays an egg in another robin’s nest. Second and third nestings of a season sometimes have only two eggs.
