Manny Herzig, longtime Falls High School teacher, resident of Ranier and avid outdoorsman, recently returned from a vacation stay in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Herzig accompanied his daughter Linda Jones and her husband Gary, of Chilton, Wis., to visit his granddaughter Holly Jones, who has resided for several years in San Salvador. She operates a restaurant and is working toward a masters degree in environmental management.
The group took in the sights including the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, hiking one of the five volcanoes in the country as well as swimming in a 600-foot deep crater lake. A coffee farm was toured and the cuisine of the country experienced.
The highlight of the trip, members of the group reported through former Falls resident Mary Friendt, was a canopy tour, also known as a zip line. Herzig soared above the treetops and waterways. On completing the tour, the guides asked him his age and he responded that he was 83. They informed him that the previous record was held by a 74-year-old. Herzig chuckled and seemed to enjoy the fact that he now holds a standing record in San Salvador, El Salvador.
