Decon unit

An aquatic invasive species decontamination unit will this year be at Voyageurs National Park Rainy Lake Visitor Center, accessed 11 miles east on Highway 11. This photo shows the unit in previous years parked at a different site.

Koochiching County and Voyageurs National Park have teamed to provide watercraft decontamination services at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

This gives inspectors the opportunity to provide a decontamination free of charge to any boaters entering or exiting Rainy Lake, said Sam Soderman, water resources specialist with Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District.

The district has partnered with the county Environmental Services department to share administration of the county Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Program.

The goal of the program is to prevent aquatic invasive species from entering or exiting Minnesota's bodies of water.

The decontamination unit will be available at VNP visitors center on the following dates:

  • June 7-9
  • July 12-14
  • July 26-28
  • Aug. 9-11
