Late for what?

Jim Johnson, former Journal sports editor, shot this 10-point buck at 8 a.m. on the opening day of deer season from the same stand just outside Cambridge, Minn., that he shot a 10-pointer from last year. He notes that this year’s buck, estimated at about 200 pounds, was larger, body-wise, than the buck shot last year. He took the deer with a bolt action 7 MM rifle. He dropped the deer off at the taxidermist, marking the second buck to have a place on his wall. “The hunting gods have been generous these past two years” he reports.
Meanwhile, shooting the buck caused him to be just 15 minutes late for photos at the wedding of his hunting partner and best friend, where he served as an usher.
“It serves as a lesson for all deer hunters not to get married on opening firearms weekend,” says Johnson. “We hunt about 100 yards from each other and there’s a good chance he could’ve had a shot at this monster. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it due to his wedding. Things turned out so well, I was only 15 minutes late for pictures as an usher, but that was easily forgiven with the circumstances.”
