District 5 — Eveleth area

CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports a busy past week with fishing, boating and invasive species enforcement on Rainy Lake. ATV enforcement and animal-related complaints also balanced out the workload. A youth firearms safety class and field day were held in Littlefork over the weekend.

CO Shane Zavodnik (International Falls #2) spent time following up on a variety of different cases and worked mainly ATV enforcement during the week. Numerous nuisance-animal calls were received. Zavodnik wants to remind campers and homeowners that ?easy pickings? such as bird feeders, garbage, and food left outside can attract unwanted customers from the woods. In most cases, if garbage and food are not left outside, and bird feeders are taken down for a while, animals will move along. Time was also spent instructing the field day portion of a firearms safety class in Littlefork. Attendees went through a variety of scenarios, including proper gun handling, trespassing, and deciding whether or not to shoot. The weather was nice and all the attendees did a great job! Enforcement action taken during the week included ATV and angling violations, including a DWI arrest.

CO John Slatinski IV (Ray) reports ATV use, trapping, and theft were concerns heard during the past week. Beaver-, deer-, and bear-related complaints were heard with options for resolution discussed. With an increase in individuals heading out for water-related vacations, AIS laws were focused on with several individuals educated on the topic. The week was finished out assisting local volunteer firearms safety instructors and area conservation officers with a firearms safety field day.

CO Troy Fondie (Orr) monitored angling, boating, and ATV activities. Beaver-related complaints continue. Public access sites were checked. Fishing remains poor. Area forest roads were monitored. Equipment work and administrative tasks are ongoing.

CO Duke Broughten (Cook) spent the past week monitoring angling, boating and ATV activity. Anglers continue to report limited success on Lake Vermilion. Cooler weather appeared to limit boating activity. Broughten also spent time checking compliance with AIS laws and working ATV complaints.
